October is when our year turns inside out. The ashwagandha’s green top has done its work, and what matters now is underground: root harvest is upon us — the wet, cold, joyful weeks when we pull fresh roots from the soil and press them within days. The dark half of the year is when the good stuff comes in.
The old calendars marked this turn the same way. When the moon comes full on the evening of Sunday, October 25, it’s the one they called the Hunter’s Moon — the provisioning moon, when the fields stood cleared and the larders filled and everything turned toward readiness. Not a moon of fear. A moon of preparation.
A plant friend for this moon
Two, actually. Ashwagandha is the obvious one — this is its moment, the root itself coming home. And for the days getting shorter and fuller at once, Hero’s Blend — grounding, centering, protecting — was practically formulated for the dark half of the year.
For the bright night
- Lay in your provisions. Not just the pantry — the calendar. What will hold you through the darker months? Walks, soup, people, sleep. Write the list like it’s a shopping list, because it is.
- Honor something gathered. Cook one thing that came out of the ground this fall.
- Ground down. Your single evening milliliter of ashwagandha, lights low, and an early night. The hunters rested too.
The dark half is coming. Meet it provisioned.
We grow, press, and rest by the rhythms of this place — the seasons, the soil, and the bright nights in between.
With Warm Ashwagandha Wishes,
Jeff and the Portland Ashwagandha Farm Team
